In completing the assignment, our main goal was to investigate how congested Burwood has been after Westfield was opened there in 1966.The data we gathered was that since Burwood is so popular for many people who don’t even live in Burwood, the whole place overall has gotten a lot busier. This left people with many issues about Burwood overall, with the place being too crowded, leading to busy roads, road safety and lack of pedestrian crossings.
The main issues we were trying to focus on with Burwood are how and why it was so populated. With the results of our survey, it is shown that most visitors who come to Burwood Westfield do not actually live there. It seems that most people go there to shop and eat as it is an easy to access and local shopping centre that overtook the Burwood Shopping Centre, changing people’s everyday lives with easy access to a convenient store. Many people come every week, especially students who come after school to relax and grab a bite. As shown in the primary data, half the people I have surveyed come at least once a week. Meanwhile, 3 people come twice a week and 7 people come at least three days every week. This is not only because the people who live here come here every day, but people from nearby suburbs like Croydon and Strathfield also come here regularly. However, a lot of people also agreed that there can be improvements made to the roads and public transport services in the area, especially from the southern suburbs where people cannot take a direct bus or train to Burwood. Mentions of the roads and crossings were also included, as Burwood Road (also right in front of Burwood Station) is a bit narrow and occasionally has large amounts of traffic.
From the secondary data, we can see that Westfield attracts a lot of customers to shop there. With total annual retail sales being $445,700,000, and at least 13 million customer visitors every year, there is no wonder why Westfield has busied up Burwood ever since its opening. There are also 18 bus lines and 4 train lines, however, many of them go in many similar directions and no transport lines can be taken directly to and fro from Burwood to southern suburbs. There are also increasing amounts of people who decide to live in Burwood, from 32,423 in 2011 compared to 29381 in 2001. This means that the population of Burwood is increasing every year, and more safety issues need to be addressed, especially on roads. This data also helps us to process the focus questions, of which being the population of Burwood, the transport of Burwood and how Burwood Westfield affects everyday life.
Potential solutions are we can install more pedestrian crossings, wider walkways or roads and promotional walking schemes. Overall, the congestion around Burwood Westfield is quite high and should be solved immediately.
